New Materialism: Interviews & Cartographie

Interview with Karen Barad Q1: New materialism as a term was coined by Manuel DeLanda and Rosi Braidotti in the second half of the 1990's. New materialism shows how the mind is always already material (the mind is an idea of the body), how matter is necessarily something of the mind (the mind has the body as its object), and how nature and culture are always already naturecultures (Donna Haraway's term). New materialism opposes the transcendental and humanist (dualist. Barad's new feminist materialist, posthumanist rethinking of performativity, and of the world itself, to conclude, pushes us towards a new understanding of materiality. Materiality is no longer either given or a mere effect of human agency, but rather an active factor in processes of materialization (ibid., p. 827). And this has, as described above, profound consequences for our understanding of performativity Inspired by Jewish Continental philosophers Jacques Derrida and Emmanuel Levinas, and firmly rooted in the (Harawayian) feminist science studies tradition that emphasizes the need for accountable and just knowledge production, the idea that one cannot but ethically engage with the world, has a central place in Barad's new feminist materialist theory of agential realism (see e.g. Barad, 1999/1998, 2003, and 2007). Barad's ethico-onto-epistem-ology itself can in fact be regarded as a. Barad seeks to demonstrate the critical epistemological and ethical implications of the originary ontological relationality of matter. Western ontological conceptions of matter as inert and passive are deeply tied up with epistemological theories and assumptions about what can be known by whom and how knowledge is obtained. Traditionally Western epistemology operates on the basis of a subject. Barad's theory is one that describes the physics of the observation of a world where: Agential intra-actions are causal enactments. (2007, p. 176) For Barad, 'agency' is not an attribute of something or someone; rather it is the process of cause and effect in enactment (p. 214): Agency is 'doing' or 'being' in its intra-activity. It is the enactment of iterative changes to particular practices - interative reconfigurings of topological manifolds of spacetimematter relations.

Agency is not an individual property (Barad, 2003, p. 827). Rather who and what acts, is a phenomenal question. It is a decision, an incision, a cutting together/apart of the agentic qualities of phenomena that emerge in the ongoing performance of the world. This means that we might recognize agency in different forms as relations, movements, repetitions, silences, distances, architecture. In Barad's performative ethico-onto-epistemology, apparatus is fundamentally a material-discursive dynamicenactment entangled with processes of materialisation. [A]pparatuses are the material conditions of possibility and impossibility of mattering; they enact what matters and what is excluded from mattering. (Barad, 2007, p. 148). Apparatuses performs inclusions and exclusions: Intra-actions include the larger material arrangement (i.e., set of material practices) that effects an. In such a view, matter simply is [] a doing, as Karen Barad puts it.11 Matter is what it does or how it moves, as Thomas Nail puts it.12 And since the performances of humans are not external to those of the rest of the material world, this view also leads, importantly, to a performative understanding of science in which every act of observing also constitutes, at once, a transformation of what is being observed. Barad's work has also been called 'neo-materialism' or 'New Materialism,' but it is clear from Kukla's essay that many of the fundamental tenets of naturalized objectivity are endorsed by Barad. Given this, we can, minimally, examine her work to determine if Barad has successfully managed the difficulties stated above, and if so, how. If Barad's approach has been successful, her work will be. What is New Materialism? Angelaki, 24(6), 111-134.Kommentiert von Marietta Schmutz (Stand: 19.6.2020) Der neue Materialismus bzw. Barad (Meeting the universe halfway, 2007) proposes 'agential realism' to help rethink how we might do empiricism in a post-quantum world (p. 829). Her work is in conversation with other feminist philosophers (such as Rosi Braidotti and Elizabeth Grosz) and shares with these 'third-wave' feminists a post-human perspective on gender and other biomarkers of difference. What marks this. From social sites, we can understand how elements, such as readers, authors, context, novels, culture and digital platforms, intra-act (Barad 2007) to create an affecting/ed communicative process.
